I was petting my dog when I noticed a raised patch of hair on her back, and gently pulled on it, thinking it was just a clump of hair. Instead, the entire patch of fur, including the skin came out in a bloody mess. I've been cleaning the area, but as I was looking across her back, there are other mealy, infected areas. I'm really scared, and I'm hoping she'll be okay. She's a white labrador, about 4 years old. PLEASE HELP!Something is wrong with my dog's skin and hair... skin and hair loss, help!?
I really doubt it is contagious. Don't get freaked out, but make an appointment for the vet right away. It sounds like mange, which is very difficult and expensive to suppress, but it isn't contagious.
Mange manifests as bleeding sores which generally turn into scabs and result in hairloss. It is painful for the dog but it won't kill him. Just take a deep breath, calm down, call the vet, and let them know that you have an emergency. It will be fine. Trust me.
Let me know how it turns out okay?Something is wrong with my dog's skin and hair... skin and hair loss, help!?
Definitely time to go see your vet. It's NOT an emergency, but shouldn't wait very long. So right now just clean the wound with some hydrogen peroxide and the closed pustules with rubbing alcohol and then take her in Monday morning. You can also give her Benadryl (1mg/lb) overnight to help control the discomfort until you can get her in to get proper treatment.
Sounds like a pyoderma (skin infection). Usually they are secondary to some other cause like allergies or parasites. So your vet will probably prescribe an antibiotic shampoo and/or oral antibiotics depending on the severity, but will also need to evaluate for the primary cause of irritation. They may check for mange mites and other parasites. Other causes are hard to pinpoint. Allergies can be really difficult to identify, but luckily antihistamines often keep them in check. If it becomes chronic, your vet may recommend allergy testing at some point.
Well its possibly a skin infection.I also Highly doubt its a contagious but it will take her to the Vet ASAP because the dog is probably in pain right now and also if you put a cloth or something on the wound it could infect the area.
well it just depends on how old he/she is if its young its a bad sign . sign of stress and if its old its just ready about 2 leave (if u know what i mean)if your dog is old
i'm sorry
that sounds very serious.
please take her to the vet as soon as you can.
im sure the dog is in pain.
TAKE HER TO THE VET ASAP. IT COULD BE CONTAGIOUS NOT TO JUST OTHER DOGS, BUT HUMANS.
It can be a whole host of things, skin allergy, mites, fleas, mange, or a skin infection. GET HER TO THE VET!
You should make a appointment with the vet. ASAP. Poor doggie. :(
Hey by the sounds of what your saying, it sounds like your dog has a hot spot..........Hot spots are caused my skin irritation, i bite or scratch or maybe flies or dry skin....My rotti had one couple months ago it started with him itching like crazy just above his shoulder and then we noticed it was getting moist on that same area, no longer then 24 hours it was bald the hair fell out and it was bloody raw and pussing it was very disturbing, i had no clue what it was or what to do so i took him to the vet and she labeled it as a hot spot and said its common in dogs, but you have to take care of it properly as it is an infection of the skin and is very very sore for the dog and can spread.......make sure you get her antibiotics and clean it daily so no infection starts and there is a cooling spray you can get that will sooth the pain for her........SO TAKE HER TO THE VETS
